Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What happens if it rains?
A: The MD5K takes place rain or shine. If there is dangerous weather, such a lightning directly overhead at start time, the Race Director may delay the start or may need to cancel the race for everyone’s safety.
But this is Kansas, where the weather can change fast. Most of time, the worst we’ll get is drippy weather. We recommend a hat and a trash bag to keep the upper half dry. It’s not glamorous, but it works, and running through rain will be another element that adds to the MD5K accomplishment!
It is possible, but extremely unlikely, that the race could be cancelled due to severe weather. As is the policy at other races, no refunds are given for weather-related issues, since the weather is beyond our control.
Q: Do I have to be a runner to participate?
A: No! Many of our participants are walkers, and many have never entered a race before. You just need to be able to complete the 3.1 miles comfortably.
Q: How do I know if I can complete the 3.1 miles?
A: If you can walk for an hour, you are probably covering the distance. If you’d enjoy a training program to help you prepare, check out the Women’s Training Team at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Q: Do you allow baby joggers/strollers?
A: Yes, but for everyone’s safety they must start at the back of the race field and walk only during the event. Running or jogging while pushing a stroller is not allowed. Following these guidelines will prevent accidents as well as avoid harm to yourself, your child and other runners. There is no extra fee; you do not need to register a child riding in a stroller. Sorry, wagons are not allowed.
Q: Do I have to be a certain age to participate?
A: The Mother’s Day 5K is open to all ages. Our youngest participant was 3 years old, and our oldest was 92 years young.
Q: What happens if I get sick, or I don’t end up attending the race? Can I give my entry to someone else, or get my money back?
A: Sorry, entries are non-refundable and non-transferable. No exceptions.
Q: I’m not familiar with Corporate Woods. Where is it, and where exactly does the race start?
A: Corporate Woods is an office park in a beautiful natural setting in Overland Park, Kansas. Located between I-435, US 69 Highway, College Boulevard, and Antioch Road, it’s easy to reach. The address is 9401 Indian Creek Parkway in Overland Park, KS, 66210. The crossroads are College Boulevard and Antioch. From 1-35, exit to 69 Highway, then take the College Blvd East exit. The race starts and finishes in front of Building 40. (Course Map)
Enter Corporate Woods from either Antioch or College Boulevard. From Antioch, enter on Indian Creek Parkway or 110th Street. From College Boulevard, enter on Benson, Grandview, Indian Creek Parkway, or Mastin. Plan to arrive no later than 7:15 a.m. Overland Park Police may restrict traffic on the course beginning at 7:30 am.
Q: Can men enter the race?
A: This run/walk is for women and girls. Men and boys are welcome to come out and cheer for you, make a poster for you in the Family Fun Zone, and join you for Finish Line refreshments.
Q: Where should I park?
A: Parking is plentiful. “Mother’s Day 5K Parking” signs with arrows will help you find your way into the many open parking lots. You will NOT be able to enter the lots directly north or east of Building 40. (Course Map)
Q: Can I run with my dog?
A: Sorry, dogs are not allowed on the race course.
Q: What time do I need to be there before the start?
A: If you have already picked up your packet, we recommend that you arrive at the start by 7:15. You’ll want to allow time to get through the port-a-pot line, check any extra clothing, and visit with the other excited participants. If you need to pick up your packet, plan to arrive no later than 7:00, as race day pick-up closes at 7:30. Note: Overland Park Police may restrict traffic on the course starting at 7:20 am.
Q: Can I register on the day of the race?
A: No. The last day to register is May 13, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods, 119th and Nall, unless we reach our capacity earlier. We cap the race at 3,500 entrants to preserve the safety and quality of our event. Most years we sell out early. Register soon to assure your place!
Q: Can I pick up a race packet for someone else?
A: Yes, but please make sure they know you are picking it up for them, so they don’t come in themselves and find it missing.
Q: Are there any hotels nearby?
A: Yes. If you are coming in from out-of-town, the DoubleTree Hotel in Corporate Woods is very close to the start line. (Note: We’ve just learned that the DoubleTree is sold out for 2017 Mother’s Day weekend. But there’s a Marriott at 10800 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66210, which is about a mile away.)
Q: Where can I store my personal belongings at the race?
A: There will be a clothing check at the KC Express table under our big tent. Label your gym bag with your name. Please leave any valuables at home or locked in the trunk of your car.
Q: How do I find out my finish time?
A: Results will be available at our Results Kiosk/laptops at the race, and on this website on race day afternoon. Check our home page for a link to results.
Q: Who benefits from this event?
A: You do! Because health and fitness are essential to your well-being, you are a beneficiary of this event. We also donate a portion of race fees to the American Heart Association programs that promote healthier hearts through exercise. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death and disability in American women. KC Express invests a portion of race fees in its ongoing programs to support women’s health.
